Update Your Mac - MacOs

How to Update macOs on your Mac

Periodically, Apple releases updates to the macOS operating system, incorporating enhancements to built-in applications and critical security patches. Upon receiving a notification indicating available software updates, you have the option to either install them promptly or schedule installation for a later time, typically overnight.

Alternatively, users can manually check for macOS updates through the Software Update settings. For step-by-step guidance on this process, refer to the information below.

Before you Update

  1. Before installing new software, it is always a good idea to backup your Mac.
  2. Make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet

Use Software Update

  1. Open Software Update. You can use Spotlight in the menu bar to search for "Software Update," then open it from the search results.
    1. You can also open it from Settings:
      1. From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar of the window that opens, then click Software Update on the right.
  2. When opened, Software Update automatically begins checking for new software.
    1. If new software is available for your Mac, click the button to Update or Upgrade.
    2. If new software is not available for your Mac, or Software Update says that your Mac is up to date; this means that there is no update available at this time. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac model.
      1. For Example, if your Mac is not compatible with a later version of macOS, Software Update does not offer it to you.
  3. Before installation begins, you are asked to enter your administrator password. This is the password you use to log in to your Mac.
  4. During installation, your Mac might restart and show a progress bar or blank screen several times; this is normal.
    1. The example below shows what a Software Update might look like in macOS Sonoma. This may look a little different to your version of macOS:

AlertTip: For updates pertaining to software acquired from the App Store, users can access the App Store to initiate the update check. Go to your Applications folder, click on the Updates tab in the App Store to check for updates, or search for the software by name.
